South Africa is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world
As one of 17 megadiverse countries in the world, South Africa hosts many of the world's species with a large number that are found nowhere else. The variable landscapes, seascapes and extensive coastlines provide habitats for a great selection of plants and animals.
South Africa’s biodiversity is a national asset
that provides economic prosperity and social wellbeing in an assortment of ways, from the cultural and spiritual connection with the natural world to the health benefits that come from a clean and safe environment. Biodiversity is an important national element that needs to be taken care of. Many citizens rely on natural provisions such as water, climate protection and food. Furthermore, South Africa’s rich natural resources underpin its developing economy and provide aspects for future growth. The conservation, protection of biodiversity and the benefits it provides to people is central to South Africa’s sustainable development and is a core element in South Africa’s climate response.
The Biodiversity Sector Investment Portal promotes investment opportunities and encourages the development of connections between investees/communities and investors/intermediaries. This investment enables and creates many benefits that contribute towards the growth of the economy, the wellbeing of society and biodiversity conservation.
We are all responsible for building a solid foundation in conserving biodiversity. Maintaining the legacy for present and future generations is within our hands. It is very much like building a home on a rock foundation. Ensuring the stability of our natural resources guarantees the security of livelihoods in South Africa.
"To restore stability to our planet, therefore, we must restore its biodiversity, the very thing we have removed. It is the only way out of this crisis that we ourselves have created. We must rewild the world!”
David Attenborough
This is the story we are writing. The story that our children will read. The tale of a sustainable future.

Key Partners
The Biodiversity Sector Investment Portal is enabled by DFFE, SANBI and OPERATION PHAKISA with support from UNDP BIOFIN.
The collaboration and implementation of the Biodiversity Investment Portal brings together national, provincial and local governments as well as biodiversity programmes and the financial investment required to create platforms both online and in-person. These factors facilitate the awareness of South Africa’s biodiversity treasures and how Investment can be introduced through Investment Opportunities in order to feed positively into the Biodiversity Economy. The end result creates jobs, transformation and improves individual wellbeing.
